Encouraging workers to ask questions and report incidents will help identify near misses and reduce accidents. It is the employer’s responsibility to train their employees on job related safety standards. This makes a near miss just as important as an accident and being able to identify near misses becomes vital. According to the National Safety Council, about 75% of all accidents are preceded by one or more near misses. Every workplace should prioritize near misses just as much as accidents They go hand-in-hand. A Near Miss is an unplanned, undesired event that could have resulted in personal injury and/or property damage. Have you ever been in or witnessed a situation where you thought to yourself, “That was a close one” or “I’m lucky nothing serious happened”? If so, that situation is called a near miss and they happen in the workplace, every day.
